Wanaartha Life Customers Urge for Transparency Number of Victims: Impossible 28 thousand

Andrianus.my.id , Jakarta - A customer of PT Asuransi Jiwa Adisarana Wanaartha ( Wanaartha Life ), Henry Lukito, demands transparency of premium holder data. Henry doubted that the number of customers affected by default would reach 28,000 to 100,000, as stated by the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

"The number of customers cannot possibly reach 28 thousand, it is impossible to say 100 thousand. If there are 100,000, please verify it to us customers," he said at the Tempo office on Friday, December 9, 2022.

Lukito admitted that there had never been any official customer data collection after the Wanaartha default case emerged. He also estimates that there are no more than 5,000 customers who are victims of Wanaartha based on independent data collection collected through instant messaging groups or through calculations during the action movement.

When gathering customers to carry out a movement at the Horse Statue, Central Jakarta, for example, the total number of parties who claimed to be victims was no more than 1,100 people. "Maybe it's even smaller, 1,000-2,000 people. I'm asking for customer data and the number of policies to be transparent," said Lukito.

He thinks that the number of customers who claim to reach tens of thousands makes it seem as if the case cannot be resolved. Thus, the OJK is considered unable to help its customers.

The customer, Lukito continued, had communicated directly with OJK regarding data on Wanaartha victims. However, according to him, the OJK had difficulty dealing with it because the total number of customers was extremely large.

“So (they) have given up. Maybe it can't be claimed because all of these are still confiscated," he said.

In fact, if the total number of victims is in accordance with the calculations of the customers, according to Lukito, the amount that Wanaartha must bear to compensate for the loss is not too large. He gave an example that the average customer puts up a premium of IDR 800 million. When multiplied by 5,000 people, the number is not as big as what the company calculates.

"If the average per policy is IDR 800 million multiplied by 28 thousand, then we will be weak."

Lukito continued, accurately recording the number of victims should not be too difficult. OJK or Wanaartha, he said, simply asked customers to bring the police files and have them verified.

"If the person has died, there are heirs whose names are also listed. It's not really something difficult. So our problem is actually not a complicated one, it's simple, what kind of good intentions actually are," said Lukito.

Furthermore, the customer lost IDR 2.4 billion.

A Loss Story of IDR 2.4 Billion at Wanaartha

Lukito became a Wanaartha Life customer for the first time in September 2019 with a policy value of IDR 1.2 billion for one policy for the Saving Plan insurance product. He then registered another policy with the same value, bringing the total value of money placed in the insurance to Rp 2.4 billion.

"These are two policies I took 3 years from 2019 in September and October. So I was able to receive benefits 2-3 months. It was my first time participating," he said.

He is interested in becoming a customer of the insurance because the interest benefits are slightly higher than deposits. If deposit interest is around 7.5 percent in 2019, Wanaartha Life can promise 10 percent interest per year.

"I am subject to a 20 percent tax deduction on deposits. But because this is insurance, it is final, 10 percent is received in total each year," said the man who works in a private company in the financial sector.

Ogi Prastomiyono, OJK Non-Bank Financial Industry Supervision Chief Executive, noted that there are 28 thousand Wanaartha Life insurance policy holders. However, of that number, some were registered in groups, so the OJK estimates that the total insurance company participants are around 100 thousand participants.

"For certainty, there will be a liquidation team that verifies the Wanaartha policyholder participants," said Ogi after the virtual Monthly Board of Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, December 6, 2022.

Wanaartha Life is an insurance company that is considered problematic because it is unable to cover the difference between liabilities and assets, either through capital injections by controlling shareholders or inviting investors. This company sells products with returns that are not matched by the company's ability to get returns from managing its investments. This condition was engineered by the company so that the financial reports submitted to OJK and published financial reports did not match the actual conditions.

OJK has also revoked its business license on Monday, December 5 2022. "The revocation of Wanaartha's license was carried out by OJK as an effort not to allow conditions to drag on which creates uncertainty for consumers," said Ogi.

Wanaartha is also required to stop all business activities, both at the head office and outside the head office. The company is then asked to prepare and submit a closing balance sheet to the OJK, no later than 15 days after the revocation of the business license. To prevent the same problems from recurring, OJK has also formed a special supervision team to monitor companies with problems.
