Dear Entrepreneur, Unilever Boss Says Don't Be Stingy in Giving Salaries to Employees

Andrianus.my.id -- Nusa Dua -Unilever CEO Alan Jope encourages employers who are his suppliers to pay employees properly. This is also what the company claims to have done for the last three years.

Jope targets that by 2030 the suppliers who work with him must pay their employees properly.

"It took us three years to get to a position where we are confident that everyone at Unilever is living a living wage. Last year we committed that by 2030 everyone in our value chain, all of our suppliers, must pay their employees a living wage if they are to do business with Unilever ," said Jope at the B20 Summit Indonesia in Bali, Monday (14/11/2022) yesterday.

"This creates a prosperous society, a society that has the capacity to buy the types of products and brands that Unilever sells. So this is not just a moral imperative, it is a business imperative," he said.

In addition, a living wage also contributes to overall economic growth. Jope said every 1% increase in wages could increase retail consumption by half a percent.

"The fact is that for every 1% increase in base wages, you (the company) get a half-percent increase in retail consumption which is a multiple of the investment," he explained.

"So we firmly push for fair wages by 2030 for everyone in the Unilever value chain to drive consumption, to drive economic growth and to protect the environment," he added.
